Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy is an opportunity for partners to address challenges in their relationship, speak with the support of a neutral third party, process experiences and work on issues like attachment, intimacy and life transitions. The Growth & Wellness Therapy Centre supports partners and couples at all stages of a relationship.

Why Would People Access Couples Therapy?

People access Couples Therapy for a variety of reasons including for relationship changes, trouble communicating, fertility challenges and family planning, inter-faith or inter-cultural relationships, lack of trust, intimacy issues, and the impact of mental health challenges on the relationship unit. It can be helpful to meet with a neutral third party to speak about needs and issues in a safe and supportive environment. Practitioners are trained in best practice skills related to conflict management and communication, and can support you in finding the tools to work through your issues together.

Do You Only See Monogamous Partners?

No. Our practitioners support monogamous, non-monogamous and open relationships. We’re here to support you and your partner(s) in whatever way works for you, whether that’s working together as a group or in dyadics.

Types of Therapy and Support

Couples Therapy will look different depending on what you and your partner(s) need, and what kind of methods or approaches your therapist uses. Some couples therapists meet only with the partners as a unit, and others prefer to also have occassional check in meetings with all parties individually. Each practitioner will have their own approach to supporting couples, but some of the therapies you might experience at The Growth & Wellness Therapy Centre include:

  • The Gottman Method

  • Emotion Focused Couples Therapy

  • Narrative Therapy

  • Solution Focused Therapy

  • Marriage Preparation Sessions

Working with a Clinician

Our office has a number of professionals who work with couples and partners, who you can view below. Once your clinician has met with you and completed their assessment they will make a plan with you and your partner(s) to address the symptoms or causes that may be negatively impacting your relationship. Therapy is most effective when there is a strong connection between the therapist and client, and because of that we encourage you to meet for consults with as many clinicians as you need to ensure the best fit.
