Practicum Opportunities

What are Practicums Like at GWTC?

Our office takes on graduate-level interns for our Intern Program from a variety of psychotherapy-related programs throughout the year including, but not limited to, the MSW programs at the University of Toronto and Wilfrid Laurier University and the MACP program at Yorkville University. Our students focus on learning both the administrative and clinical sides of private practice. Students allow for the clinic to continue to provide accessible services by offering therapy appointments for a reduced or pro bono fee.

Depending on your areas of focus there may be opportunities to observe, co-counsel or provide therapy to individuals, children, families, couples and groups. Our student interns work with clients facing a variety of issues such as anxiety, stress, trauma, poverty and risk of homelessness, school issues, family dynamics, chronic illness and more. Sessions are facilitated both online and in office.

Requirements for Practicum

Please note that if you are an MACP student, you need to obtain your RP (Qualifying) status prior to starting practicum to be able to complete your supervision hours in-house with our MSW supervisors.

As our practicum is highly competitive we encourage you to apply as soon as possible, and encourage you to provide evidence of clinical trainings and/or direct client experience outside of your school program in your resume and cover letter.

All practitioners, staff and students at GWTC must provide a vulnerable sector screening prior to beginning with us. Information on how to apply for this will be provided during your onboarding.

Once practicum has started, all students are required to engage in weekly individual supervision with their supervisor, and biweekly group consultation with another senior clinician at our office. We do not charge our interns for supervision. There may also be opportunities to observe monthly clinician group consultation sessions.

Student interns must be available for in office appointments once a week, unless otherwise agreed upon with your supervisor and the Clinic Director. They must be available at least one evening a week, and must also be available for additional times or dates as agreed upon for online sessions which are to be done remotely. They need to have access to a private, secure space outside of the office that can be used to attend supervision and sessions remotely. All students are required to facilitate or co-facilitate at least one of our free drop-in support groups which currently run on Thursday evenings.

During practicum student interns are also expected to host at least one workshop or lunch and learn for the team. This is for team knowledge sharing only and can be on any topic, intervention or issue you have an interest in or experience with.
