Get to Know Emma Krisko: Couples Therapist Focused on Brain-Body-Mind Connection
“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves”
I became a therapist because I truly believe in the power of personal growth, and I can personally attest to the benefits of psychotherapy services.
When I began studying psychology, I was fascinated by the connection between our physical brain, body, and our mind. Learning about how our nervous system and brain structure can influence how we think and feel about our world was life-changing; it should be standard common knowledge! My goal is to help bring this information to my clients so they can better understand how their brain works, and how to work with it- rather than against it.
I want my clients to know that, above all, I provide a safe space with compassion and zero judgment. You are free to be yourself here, even if you don't know who that is yet. I am in your corner, and we can figure things out together in a way that is meaningful to you. I maintain a delicate balance of validating and supporting you, while still holding you accountable to your personal goals for therapeutic growth.
What would you tell a client who is nervous about starting to work with a therapist?
I would tell my client that a little bit of anxiety is normal, and it's not necessarily a bad thing- but in the meantime, we will move at whatever pace you're comfortable with. If there are parts of you that hurt, things you're not ready to talk about, you don't have to. Whether it's your first time in therapy or you've had poor experiences in the past, I'm here to meet you where you're at.
What's your favourite self care activity?
I believe self-care is an umbrella term for such a wide range of activities, habits, and behaviours, which all amount to simply taking care of ourselves. At its surface, self-care is doing something pleasurable for yourself- a face mask, a sweet treat, a hot bath, but it's also doing things that are good for us- like giving up a bad habit, moving our bodies, getting some sunlight. But one of the most overlooked aspects of self-care? Self-improvement- Healing old wounds, challenging self-sabotaging behaviours, and setting much-needed boundaries to protect our peace. But if I had to pick a favourite? It would be a sweet treat.
